Microlaryngeal surgery ( voice surgery)

MICROLARYNGEAL SURGERY COVER PIC

Microlaryngeal surgery ( voice surgery)

Microlaryngeal surgery, also known as phonomicrosurgery, is a surgical procedure using a microscope and fine instruments to address various laryngeal (voice box) conditions, including benign lesions, paralysis, scarring, and even cancer, with a focus on voice preservation.

What it is:

  • Minimally Invasive:

Microlaryngeal surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that allows surgeons to access and treat problems within the larynx (voice box) with greater precision and less trauma than traditional open surgery.

  • Uses a Microscope:

The procedure uses a microscope to provide a magnified view of the vocal folds (vocal cords) and surrounding tissues, enabling the surgeon to see and manipulate structures with greater accuracy.

  • Variety of Conditions:

It’s used to address a range of conditions, including:

  • Benign Vocal Fold Lesions: Such as cysts, polyps, nodules, and Reinke’s edema.
  • Vocal Cord Paralysis: Where one or both vocal cords are unable to move properly.
  • Vocal Cord Scarring: Scar tissue that can impair vocal function.
  • Laryngeal Cancer: In some cases, microlaryngeal surgery can be used to remove cancerous tissue while preserving as much vocal cord function as possible.
  • Airway Stenosis: Narrowing of the airway.
  • Tools:

Surgeons use specialized instruments and sometimes lasers, guided by the microscope, to perform the surgery.

  • Voice Preservation:

A key goal of microlaryngeal surgery is to preserve vocal function as much as possible, even when treating serious conditions.

Why it’s done:

  • Diagnosis and Treatment:

Microlaryngeal surgery can be used both for diagnosis (e.g., taking a biopsy) and for treatment (e.g., removing a lesion).

  • Improved Outcomes:

Microlaryngeal surgery can lead to improved voice quality and function in patients with various laryngeal conditions.

  • Minimally Invasive:

The minimally invasive nature of the procedure results in faster recovery times and less pain compared to traditional surgery.

Before and After:

  • Pre-operative Evaluation:

Before surgery, patients undergo a thorough evaluation, including a laryngoscopy, to assess the condition of their vocal cords.

  • Voice Rest:

After surgery, patients are typically advised to rest their voices for a period of time to allow the vocal cords to heal.

  • Follow-up:

Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are important to monitor healing and ensure optimal results.

  • Speech Therapy:

In some cases, speech therapy may be recommended to help patients regain normal voice functions.
