Hip replacement surgery, also known as total hip arthroplasty, is surgery to replace a worn-out or damaged hip joint. The hip replacement surgeon replaces the old joint with an artificial joint (prosthesis).
One may be suggested for total hip replacement surgery after a hip fracture or for severe pain because of arthritis.
In a total hip replacement, the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with prosthetic components.
Hip replacement usually requires a stay in a hospital. Surgery and the procedure may vary depending on the condition and takes a few hours. The image above shows what exactly is done in this surgery.

There are 3 types of bearing surfaces available for artificial hip joint.
Selection is done depending on:
Hip instability following total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains a major challenge and is one of the main causes of revision surgery. Dual mobility (DM) implants have been introduced to try to overcome this problem. Its special joint indicated for selected situations:
Most common indication of hip replacement in India is Avascular Necrosis. Usually it happens in young patients and is bilateral.
So, in selected young patients with bilateral severe (Grade-4) AVN hip Bilateral THR is an option.
Unlike TKR its relatively rare and performed only in selected centres with clinical expertise
The success of your surgery will depend in large measure on how well you follow your orthopaedic surgeon’s instructions regarding home care during the first few weeks after surgery. In almost all cases post surgery we allow weight bearing within 2 days of surgery. Initially 2 weeks patient may require to walk with walker/stick (external support). Usually patient starts walking without support at 4 weeks post surgery.

A revision hip replacement surgery is a surgical procedure to replace a worn out hip replacement implant. Hip replacement surgery is the most common procedure performed by orthopedic surgeons and is incredibly successful. Unfortunately, the problem is that over time hip replacements wear out.
Patients who wear out their prosthesis will require revision hip replacement surgery generally. But there are also other reasons for which your orthopaedic surgeon recommends a revision hip replacement surgery.
During the initial surgery, the hip replacement components were either cemented into place or were “press fit” into the bone to allow bone to grow onto them. Sometimes, however, bone may fail to grow onto press-fit components.
In addition, cemented or press-fit components that were once firmly fixed to the bone can eventually loosen, resulting in a painful hip.
In some cases, tiny particles that wear off the cup’s plastic liner accumulate around the hip joint and are attacked by the body’s immune system. This immune response also attacks the healthy bone around the implant, leading to a condition called osteolysis. In osteolysis, the bone around the implant deteriorates, making the implant loose or unstable.
Infection is a potential complication of any surgical procedure, including total hip replacement. Infection occurs when bacteria attach in and around the surface of the prosthesis.
A hip replacement has a ball-and-socket structure like that of your natural hip. For a hip replacement to work well, the ball must remain inside the socket. Trauma or certain hip positions can sometimes cause the ball to become dislodged from the socket. This is called a “hip dislocation.”
A periprosthetic fracture is a broken bone that occurs around the components of an implant. These fractures are most often the result of a fall, and often require revision surgery.
In rare circumstances, an implant itself can break. This also requires revision surgery.
Total knee replacement surgery involves replacing the damaged or arthritic surfaces of the knee joint with artificial implants. This procedure effectively reduces pain, improves mobility, and restores function to the knee, allowing patients to regain an active lifestyle and enjoy a better quality of life.
Total hip replacement surgery is a procedure where the damaged hip joint is replaced with artificial components. This surgery is highly effective in relieving pain, improving hip function, and restoring mobility. Patients often experience significant improvements in their ability to walk, stand, and engage in daily activities.
Unicondylar knee replacement, also known as partial knee replacement, involves replacing only the damaged portion of the knee joint with a prosthetic implant. This minimally invasive procedure preserves healthy bone and tissue, resulting in faster recovery times and a more natural feeling knee joint post-surgery.
Robotic knee replacement surgery utilizes advanced robotic technology to assist the surgeon in performing precise and accurate knee joint replacement. This innovative approach enhances the precision of implant placement, resulting in improved outcomes, faster recovery, and greater patient satisfaction.
Robotic hip replacement surgery combines robotic technology with traditional hip replacement techniques to achieve optimal results. By enhancing the accuracy of component placement and ensuring proper alignment, robotic-assisted hip replacement offers patients improved joint function, reduced pain, and faster rehabilitation.
